The Dance of Life: Scalpel X Cleaver is Dr. Wong Keh Shin’s memoir, weaving a heartfelt and profound life journey around the interplay of medicine and cooking.
Starting from a childhood accident that sparked her dream of becoming a doctor, the author details her academic experience at Manipal Medical College in India—cultural shocks, academic challenges, and cross-border friendships—illustrating her growth and transformation. After returning to her homeland, she fulfilled her duty in hospitals and rural clinics, witnessing life’s joys and sorrows, while also finding love and building a family.
Her parents’ illness in their later years marked a turning point. After her mother’s passing, she shifted from holding a scalpel to a cleaver, finding solace in cooking. Through this, she discovered the shared qualities of patience and reverence for life in both practices.
